I had gastric bypass surgery. People noticed that I lost weight...almost 100 pounds. Then I had a tummy tuck and started an exercise program. People noticed that I looked better. Then I started Pure Strength. Last week I arrived in Chicago and a girlfriend who had noticed all that came before picked me up at the airport. Her jaw dropped. "What DID you do to yourself?" she screamed. "You look SO different!!!!" I realized that my shape had changed and my strength had improved. My boobs were now pointing forward instead of down; my shoulders were back and my body said, "You are a confident and strong woman". My posture was erect. My head held high. I travel 10 miles from my home (there are facilities much closer) so I can workout with Melissa. I have been involved in SuperSlow training for years prior to moving to Los Angeles and have picked right up where I left off with Melissa Gunn at Pure Strength. As a busy professional wanting to stay fit, this form of exercise makes perfect sense as I can work out once per week for only 30 minutes without breaking a sweat. As an orthopedic surgeon, it makes sense as it works all muscle fiber groups unlike conventional weight training leading to healthier muscle. It is safer for tendons, nerves, and joints allowing more time for recovery unlike conventional weight-training. With increased muscle tone and an appropriate caloric intake, fat is replaced by muscle. I have had many cardiologist colleagues over the years tout this form of exercise explaining that healthier muscle requires more blood for nourishment which also gives the heart a workout making it healthier, similar to a cardio workout.

Prior to a back injury in 2000, I was jogging three-to-four miles a day to maintain a healthy weight. After I was injured, there was no way I could continue jogging with five bulging discs in my lower back and neck. This caused daily back pain that was defined as "level five" by pain management experts. For someone who had “zero” back pain prior to the injury, this was not a pleasant new turn for my life. After seeing several doctors and going through several rounds of a variety of physical therapy, I was told that the medical profession had done all they could for me unless I wanted to undergo risky back surgery. Now as five years crept by with no effective replacement exercise that would not do more damage to my back, keep my weight down, and hold my interest, 25-to-30 pounds crept on as my muscle mass also depleted.
When I found Pure Strength, I was looking for an effective resistance training program as a way to start rebuilding my muscle mass and lose weight, but of course I had to be very careful with my back. Melissa was extremely conscientious with the program she designed for me. When we started working together, we paid special attention to any signs that might threaten my condition. I was initially frustrated that we took the program so slow because I really wanted to lose weight and see quick results (typical American that I am).
An amazing thing happened after two months of Pure Strength sessions. I found I was no longer experiencing daily back pain! This "side effect" was unbelievable because the medical profession with all their treatments told me I was "stuck." I also travel a lot for my business and prior to Pure Strength I would be in severe pain for days after a flight, even requiring me to use several heavy duty painkillers. Since I've been at Pure Strength, I'm virtually pain free after a long flight.
I've now been working with Melissa for seven months and have slowly (and reasonably) lost around ten pounds and I'm definitely toning and gaining strength. Please note that Melissa never made any promises whatsoever regarding my back pain outside of the fact that we would not continue if it was too much for me. Our objective from the beginning was to start a strength-training program for me that would not hurt or re-injure my back – period. I am thrilled beyond words that Pure Strength (through Melissa's careful supervision) has given me back more consecutive pain free days, than I can remember since before my injury five years ago.
